Friday, October 18th, Mme Joiner’s class (Grade 4) had a great time as they actively participated in a Mystery Skype. The students were incredibly well behaved and extremely focussed throughout the session.
All prep work was done well in advance, and most questions were selected with care. Students also requested some of the best resources: atlases, maps, iPads (Google Earth), and access to any print resource from within the library. Nonetheless, Mme Joiner certainly did her homework! Students were extremely well grouped – strengths and talents were considered. Despite the incredible level of excitement, everyone remained focused and on-task!
After several rounds of “rock, paper, scissors”, the session began! Questions were being asked from every direction, including from “within” the SMARTboard itself. The pace was extraordinary!
Mme Joiner’s students struggled with the exact location of the mystery class thanks in part to their shared name: New York, New York… After several explanations from the mapping experts, the class understood that the city and State shared a common name!
Thereafter, Ms. Gartside’s class was quick to catch-up and zero-in on our town! With Toronto in their sights, and almost every other surrounding town… Newmarket was identified, and with that, an explosive celebration ensued: shouts of “yahoo” and loud applauds.
Nevertheless, once students began to talk about their school and community life, you could hear a pin drop… absolute silence! Mme Joiner’s class was speechless upon learning that “The School at Columbia University” was situated in a twelve-floor skyscraper, in the heart of New York City (the school can be found on the first six floors, with residential apartments above)! Furthermore, Ms. Gartside’s students play on the roof during recess and break time, as there is no “real” playground – although they do manage a trip to Central Park on Monday’s.
Towards the end of our session, Ms. Gartside excused herself and her class, explaining that they were heading out on a field trip… Naturally, Mme Joiner’s students were VERY curious of their destination. The New Yorkers were heading to THE American Museum of Natural History… and YES, it is the museum featured in all of the “A Night at the Museum” movies… It is safe to say that EVERYONE in the Mazo library that day was beyond jealous!
Hi,
This is 5A in New York! We really like your post! It gives a lot of detail about our Mystery Skype session.
We had a great time on our field trip at the American Museum of Natural History! We saw an artist painting a portrait, and we stopped to ask questions and she was also an anthropologist who studies people by doing their portraits. We were pretty amazed that someone could do research that way.
We had a great time Skyping with you and hope maybe we can do it again during the year. We wish we had asked you some French words because only one of us speaks any French!
Bye,
5A
