La classe de Mme Uddenberg-Hay est revenue à la bibliothèque ce matin afin de rencontrer l’école Poughkeepsie une deuxième fois. Cette fois-ci, les élèves ont eu l’occasion de poser bon nombre de questions ouvertes dans le but de comparer les systèmes scolaires, les communautés, les passe-temps, etc.

Les élèves des deux écoles ont posé de belles questions. De plus, ils ont constaté que malgré leur distance et leurs citoyennetés divergentes, ils partageaient plusieurs ressemblances. Ces dernières se sont présentées lors des discussions au sujet de la musique populaire et des sports préférés. En fait, il existe des « Beliebers » et des « Puckheads » partout!

Quant aux différences, elles se rattachent surtout à la scolarisation. À New York, les études sociales se nomment les humanités. Néanmoins, elles incluent encore les aspects historiques et géographiques. Les élèves new yorkais suivent un cycle de huit jours, comparativement au cycle de cinq jours à Mazo. De plus, ils ont expliqué l’existence d’un bloc qui s’intitule « les études intensives ». Ces études se déroulent une fois par cycle. Durant ces blocs, les élèves participent à des études variées. Ils peuvent choisir parmi bon nombre de possibilités : golf, poésie, art oratoire, etc. Les 7^e de Mme Uddenberg-Hay ont bien aimé cette idée, et pour plusieurs raisons!

Enfin les élèves ont comparé la grandeur des écoles et des villes, tout en partageant leurs traits. L’école « Poughkeepsie Day » ne comporte que 350 élèves. Ces derniers rentrent au jardin et restent jusqu’à la douzième année! La ville de Poughkeepsie est l’ancienne ville capitale de l’État de New York. Elle compte environ 33,000 habitants. Bref, l’école et la ville sont plus petites (Mazo : 540 élèves; Newmarket : 85,000).

Mme Uddenberg-Hay’s students returned to the library this morning to meet-up with the Poughkeepsie Day School once again. This time, the students were permitted to ask open-ended questions in the hopes of comparing and contrasting school systems, communities, pass-times, etc.

Both schools presented great questions. Furthermore, during the second question and answer session, they were able to conclude that despite their distance and different citizenships, they shared quite a few startling resemblances. These were most evident during several discussions dealing with popular music and favourite sports. In a nutshell, “Beliebers” and “Puckheads” are everywhere!

Differences became more noticeable when the students shared their academic experiences. In New York, Social Studies are referred to as the Humanities. Regardless of the different terminology, students were quick to pick-up on the fact that both included historical and geographical aspects.  The New Yorkers also explained that their school follows an eight-day cycle, compared to Mazo’s five-day. They also talked about an “Intensive Studies” block, which takes place once per cycle. During this time, students participate in various activities. The focus of these periods varies depending on the choices made by the student. They can include: golf, poetry, public speaking, etc. Mme Uddenberg-Hay’s Grade 7s thought this was a great idea, for a number of reasons!

Finally, the students were also able to compare the size of their schools and towns. They did so by sharing their various traits. Poughkeepsie Day School has a very small enrollment comparatively speaking. There are approximately 350 students. These pupils are scattered from Kindergarten all the way up to Grade 12! Class sizes are also quite small. Mrs. Rinaldi has sixteen students! The town of Poughkeepsie was once the capital of New York State. It now boasts a population of approximately 33 000 residents. Mazo students were quick to point out the obvious differences here (Mazo: 540 students; Newmarket: 85 000 residents).
