Aujourd’hui, la classe de Mme Joiner (8^e) est venue à la bibliothèque dans le but de participer à une session « Skype mystère ». Le jour avant, les élèves se sont bien préparés en discutant des rôles et des responsabilités, des questions possibles et des ressources/outils demandés.

Les élèves ont travaillé en équipe, cependant, cette fois-ci, au lieu de travailler le même rôle, chacun avait son propre. C’est-à-dire, au lieu de placer tous les élèves ayant le même rôle ensembles, le tout a été divisé. Chaque équipe comptait un(e) cartographe, un(e) expert(e) « Google Earth », un(e) secrétaire, et un(e) porte-parole.

Au début, la classe mystère de M Candas travaillait de façon très efficace. Elle a rapidement identifié notre pays, ainsi que notre province! Les élèves de Mme Joiner s’inquiétaient de leurs aptitudes! Toutefois, le grand défi s’annonçait à la suite car cibler la ville de Newmarket n’était pas du tout facile.

Contrairement aux expériences vécues par la classe de M Candas, nos 8^e ont éprouvé de la misère à identifier la province! Suivant quelques discussions intenses en équipe, la reformulation de certaines questions, et l’addition des points cardinaux, les élèves de Mme Joiner ont ciblé le Manitoba. Par la suite, ils ont choisi la ville capitale, Winnipeg, et par chance, c’était la ville ciblée!

Néanmoins, pourquoi arrêter à ce point-là?!? La tâche est devenue encore plus complexe lorsqu’il s’agissait d’identifier le nom de l’école. Toutes mes félicitations aux élèves car ils ont posé de très bonnes questions : Votre école est-elle nommée après une personne célèbre? Est-ce un nom de garçon ? Est-ce un nom francophone ? Commence-t-il par une voyelle ?

Enfin (et grâce à l’indice fournit par les élèves de M Candas: l’école fait partie du “District scolaire franco-manitobain”), les élèves ont identifié le nom de l’école: École Lacerte, à Winnipeg, au Manitoba!

Les ontariens et les manitobains se sont tellement bien amusés qu’ils attendent impatiemment l’arrivée d’une deuxième session Skype pour pouvoir partager et discuter des ressemblances et des différences entre leurs vies scolaires, familiales, athlétiques, etc.

Mme Joiner’s Grade 8s came down to the library today to participate in their first « Mystery Skype » session. In order to prepare in advance for such a session, they discussed the various roles and responsibilities, possible questions, as well as necessary tools and/or resources.

As in previous Skype adventures, the students would be working in groups; however, to shake things up a little, they would be slightly different! Rather than working on the same role within the same group, the students would be responsible for working on different roles within a group. In other words, rather than placing all the mapping experts together, there would be one mapping expert per group. Similarly, each group would count one “Google Earth” expert, a secretary, and a spokesperson.

M Candas’ class was extremely efficient towards the beginning of the Skype session. They were able to identify our country and province of origin within minutes! Mme Joiner’s students were taken aback by their incredible aptitudes! Nevertheless, the greater challenge was apparent from then on… attempting to identify the town of Newmarket was anything BUT easy!

In stark contrast to M Candas’ class experience, “our” Grade 8s experienced great difficulty identifying the mystery province! Following several heated discussions within their groups, the restating of certain questions and the addition of cardinal points (North, East, South, West), Mme Joiner’s students zeroed in on Manitoba. Thereafter, they “magically” selected the province capital, Winnipeg, and luckily, it was the targeted city!

Nevertheless, why stop at that point?!? Why not make the task even more challenging for the intermediate students? Why not attempt to identify the name of the school? Congratulations to both classes as they formulated some great closed-ended questions that worked: Is your school named after a famous person? Is it a boy’s name? Is it a French name? Does it start with a vowel?

Finally (and thanks in part to a great hint provided by M Candas’ students: the school is a part of the “District scolaire franco-manitobain”), the students were able to successfully trace and locate it: École Lacerte, in Winnipeg, Manitoba!

The Ontarian and Manitoban students had such a great time that they are impatiently waiting for a second chance to meet up… yet another Skype session. Next time, they hope to share and discuss similarities and differences between academic, family, and sporting life – what a wonderful comparative study that will be!
